She debuted at the age of 13 and is a pioneer for interracial artists in Japan. Kay was born and raised in Yokohama in the Kanagawa Prefecture to an African American father and a South Korean mother. Her father was a sailor in the United States Navy stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. Her mother was a professional singer with one album while her father played music(bassist) as a hobby.
